Due to the uncertainty of outcome during critical illness, patients and their families are involuntarily placed in situations that require end-of-life decision-making. Often critical care nurses are asked by patients and their families to assist in the decision-making process. At present, the literature is scarce concerning how nurses\u2019 beliefs, attitudes and values may impact on patients and their families\u2019 processes in making end-of-life decisions. The purpose of this exploratory study will be to describe critical care nurses\u2019 perspectives on how they assist patients and their families in making end-of-life decisions in intensive care units. Utilizing exploratory/descriptive theory as the framework, nurses will be interviewed in a hospital in a suburban area of the Midwestern United States. Open-ended questions will explore their beliefs, attitudes and values concerning assisting patients and their families in making end-of-life decisions. Exploratory analysis will be used to identify themes of attitudes and behaviors nurses describe in aiding patients and their families in the decision-making process.
