Given the rise of participation of females in the sport of volleyball from youth to college level, this study represents an important gap in the literature of women\u2019s sports in the U.S. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the development and growth of professional women\u2019s volleyball in the United States and in Brazil. Furthermore, this study explored cultural values and societal changes that have influenced the success or failure of professional volleyball in the United States and in Brazil. Moreover, it analyzed the difficulties that women\u2019s volleyball faces to obtain sponsorships and media coverage for their teams and leagues. The process of triangulation was used for this study. The primary sources of the triangulation were the interviews: a total of fifteen people from the United States and Brazil were interviewed. The participants answered questions about their socialization into sports, their ideas about sports sponsorship, the influence of media in sports, and their views about volleyball in the United States and in Brazil. The interview data was analyzed and separated into themes that addressed the research questions. The secondary sources of the triangulation process were observations of matches in both countries and the analysis of official physical education curriculums and club volleyball websites in the U.S. and in Brazil. Results show that media coverage is one of the most important factors in the success of a professional league in both countries. Through the media, sponsors become interested in the sport as an investment. Most participants from the U.S. believe that the population focuses on men\u2019s sports, which makes it difficult for women\u2019s volleyball to succeed professionally. In Brazil, the biggest issue identified in this study is the country\u2019s economy and its impact on sport development. Their current professional league has proven to be successful, but Brazilian participants believe that there is still room to grow by increasing the number of teams that compete in the league." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Classification" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "GV1017 .V6 H33 2007" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publication Date" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "2007" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Genre" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Academic theses" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Holding Location" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University Archives and Special Collections" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Resource Identifier" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "GV1017 .V6 H33 2007_HabigerFernandaOliveira" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Language" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "English" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Permanent Link" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "http://sobekcmsrv.barrynet.barry.edu/AA00001798/00001" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Creator" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Habiger, Fernanda Oliveira" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Note" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Thesis (M.S.)--Barry University, 2007.", "Includes bibliographical references (leaves 184-187)." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Physical Description" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "x, 187 leaves : ill., charts ; 28 cm" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Publisher" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Barry University" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Place of Publication" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Miami, Fla." ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Type" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Book" ] } }, { "label": { "en": [ "Rights Management" ] }, "value": { "none": [ "Copyright Fernanda Oliveira Habiger.
