Founded in 1940 by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, Barry University's growth throughout the years has been shaped by their core values. Originally founded as Barry College for Women, Barry has grown into a coeducational university that is one of the leading centers for education in South Florida.Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, Barry University is a scholarly community committed to the highest academic standards in undergraduate, graduate and professional education.

The Monsignor William Barry Memorial Library is located at the center of the Miami Shores campus of Barry University. The Library is named in loving memory of Monsignor William Barry, one of the founders of Barry University and an inspirational figure in the Catholic Church within the Archdiocese of Miami.
The extensive Library research collections include more than 950,000 physical items, over 40,000 print and online journal subscriptions, and several thousand online books and streaming video resources. The collection is balanced to meet the research needs of the wide variety of undergraduate through doctoral programs offered at Barry University. The collection of Roman Catholic research materials is especially significant, and is one of the largest collections of its kind in the area.

Buccaneer Newspaper
The Barry University's student newspaper, Buccaneer, and its predecessors serve as an important source for documenting the campus life and student activity through its pictures, articles, editorials, and reports. The paper is edited and produced by undergraduate students and published during the regular academic year.
The Barry Buccaneer originally started as The Barry College Digest in 1940 and then changed names over time:
• Barry College Digest (monthly), November 1940 to March 1941
• Angelican (monthly), June 1941 to October 1941
• Angelicus (monthly), November 1941 to November 1969
• Hourglass (monthly), December 1969 to October 1984
• The Barry Buccaneer (Monthly), November 1984 to May 2015
• Buccaneer, November/December 2015-

Torch and Shield Yearbook Collection
Torch and Shield Yearbook Collection includes yearbooks published by the students of Barry University from 1944 to 1993. From 1964 to 1972 Torch and Shield was not published, other titles were published instead: The sundowner (1964), Postscript (1965), Profiles (1966), Reflections (1967), Pacesetters (1968), Bookends (1969), Sunrise sunset (1970), The morning of your life (1971) and Changes (1972).
In addition to portraits of students, the yearbooks include information about student organizations, athletics, events and activities during a given year. They also document the changing attitudes and culture of students and the history of the college.

Barry University Archives holds over 18,000 photographs, photo albums, negatives and slides that document the growth and development of Barry University since 1940 through the present time.
The collection consists of portraits of Barry University employees, faculty, students and alumni, as well as photographs of the university schools and departments, campus buildings, exhibitions, events, and athletics.
