|a Purpose: This study investigates the level of moral development of online counselors as compared to the level of moral development of traditional licensed counselors, in order to establish whether online counselors are as capable of making ethical decisions when faced with ethical dilemmas as their traditional counterparts.
Method: The sample was drawn from a database of 84 professional counselors who were sent surveys, such as the DIT2 and MEQ, which explore moral development and ethical decision-making abilities of counselors. T-tests, correlation and analysis of variance were used to analyze the data.
Major Findings: No significant difference was found between the ability to make ethical decisions by online counselors and that of traditional counselors. This study uncovered the need for several changes: conducting additional research from a broader, multicultural perspective, developing a multidisciplinary regulatory body, requiring accredited courses on Internet counseling for membership renewal and requiring courses on this topic for degree attainment in mental health professions. |
