|a The pursuit of an ideal body has lead to an increase in harmful health behaviors in both men and women. This study examined the relationships between disordered eating, muscle dysmorphia, exercise dependence, and body image dissatisfaction. Participants (N=180) completed six self-report measures. Women reported more disordered eating (DE) and men more muscle dysmorphia (MD); no differences were found between men and women in body dissatisfaction (BD) or exercise dependence (EXE); BD was positively related to DE, MD, EXE. Thus, DE, MD, EXE may be manifestations of a similar disorder, a body perception disorder, equally likely to occur in both genders. |
