- Abstract:
- Literature consistently discuss psychological well-being and factors that may positively and negatively impact individuals’ lives and psychological well-being. Many constructs have been examined collectively in relation to their impact on psychological well-being. However, there is a lack of research on the assessment of the strength and magnitude that each construct has over and beyond the other and its impact on positive psychological well-being. The current study focused on optimism and perceived social support, two factors that have been well examined in the literature, and religiosity and spirituality, two factors that need further investigation. The purpose of the current study was to assess the strength of religiosity and spirituality and its impact on positive psychological well-being over and beyond optimism and perceived social support. The sample consisted of 155 individuals from diverse backgrounds and educational standings. Psychological well-being was measured using the Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale. Optimism was measured using the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R). Perceived social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Religiosity and Spirituality was measured using the Spiritual Well-Being Scale. Religiosity and spirituality variables were separated in the end to obtain the individual scored for each factor. Data was analyzed using a hierarchical regression analysis. Results indicated a significant correlation between all four factors and positive psychological well-being. However, the hypothesis regarding religiosity and spirituality’s impact over and beyond optimism and perceived social support was not fully supported. Using a hierarchical regression analysis, religiosity was not supported to be over and beyond optimism and perceived social support in its impact on psychological well-being. Spirituality’s impact on psychological well-being was partially supported; specifically, its correlation was over and beyond that of religiosity and perceived social support, but this was not found in optimism in its impact on positive psychological well-being. The findings are meaningful in advocating the importance of addressing various spiritual and religious issues, as results indicate a significant positive impact on psychological well-being. Additionally, findings further demonstrate the importance of evaluating religiosity and spirituality as separate and distinct constructs.
