|a This thesis addresses the intra-Latino/a discrimination that exists among some members of
Latino/a communities. It aimed to discover the essential elements of a process through which
to foster a disposition of hospitality in the Latino/a students at the Virtual Learning
Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF) that will enable them to become agents of
hospitality toward members of Latino/a communities. This thesis followed the method of the
three mediations – socio-analytical (see), theological hermeneutical (judge); and practical
(act) – proposed in the National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry in 1987. Quantitative data
were obtained through a survey in both Spanish and English and distributed through the
Federation for Catechesis with Hispanics (FCH). This survey gathered demographic
information as well as experiences of discrimination among Latino/as in the United States.
The results of the surveys produced several experiential themes of discrimination underlying
their life experiences, including language, stereotypes, indigeneity, and economic status. The
findings of the surveys served as a foundation for a three-week seminar with VLCFF students
which explored the themes of intra-Latino/a discrimination, as well as biblical, U. S. Hispanic
and Latin American theological, and magisterial writings on hospitality. The hope is that this
seminar, grounded in the richness of the U.S. Latino/a experience, will raise awareness of
intra-Latino/a discrimination; emphasize the moral responsibility to welcome all persons
regardless of language, indigeneity, or economic status; and foster a disposition of hospitality
among the VLCFF students who are principally members of Latino/a communities. |
