- Abstract:
- This thesis seeks to explore what Christian theological perspectives would bridge the hermeneutical gap between traditions in spirituality, postmodern culture, and contemporary worldview while effectively guiding people toward personal growth and retaining a connection with the mystery of God, of self, and of the world in which they live. It does so within the comprehensive worldview of contemporary cosmology and science and examines emerging symbols within this worldview as evocative and efficacious concepts in the transformational process of spiritual direction. The survey results indicate the value of and the openness to use of these symbols by spiritual directors and goes on to propose a method for an evolutionary and cosmological spiritual direction praxis. The model being used for an evolving process of spiritual transformation is gleaned from the work of Jesuit paleontologist and pioneer in evolutionary thought, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin on the “law of attraction” as the process and trajectory of evolution. This thesis seeks to use this transformative process as a model for spiritual direction.
