|a The purpose of the present study is to understand how a scholarship affects Division II student athletes’ motivation to perform. Interviews were conducted, in which 9 student-athletes’ who held different levels of an athletic scholarship from three Division II universities were interviewed about their scholarship. Upon completion of the interviews, an analysis was conducted to identify areas of exploration for future research and considerations on the topic. Through the process of analysis, 34 different meaning units emerged and from that, 8 sub-themes were confirmed: performance, love of the game, internal motivation, and financial support, grades, perceived pressure from coach, scholarship amount, and identified regulation. The aim of this research was to increase athletes’ self-awareness, as well as provide an understanding to coaches about how and in what ways a scholarship affects student-athletes’ motivation. |
