|a The objective of this study was to describe the predictive relationship between perceived family experiences and aggressive behavior in Middle Eastern emerging adults. The current study used a cross-sectional design. Data for the current study was drawn from an archived data set, the Multi-Site University Study of Identity and Culture (MUSIC). A subset of de-identified data included 130 emerging adults of Middle Eastern background ranging in age from 18-29 years constituted the sample for the present study. The measures for the current study included a demographic questionnaire, a measure that assessed aggression in terms of overall antisocial behavior and measures of perceived family functioning processes. Parental cohesion was indexed in terms of maternal and paternal connection. Parental nurturance was indexed in terms of paternal and maternal nurturance and parental communication was indexed in terms of maternal and paternal psychological control and disrespect. Reliability analysis was conducted to evaluate internal consistency of all measures. Preliminary descriptive analyses were conducted to describe the sample in terms of background characteristics including, socio-economic status, gender, age, ethnic national origin, and family structure (divorced, blended, intact). A multiple regression analysis was employed to test the hypothesis that perceived family functioning predicted aggressive behaviors. It was expected that the perception of positive family functioning in terms of parental nurturance and connection would be negatively associated with aggression whereas the perception of negative family functioning in terms of parental psychological control and parental disrespect would be positively associated with aggressive behaviors. Overall, the present findings indicate that perceived family functioning was associated with aggression in a Middle Eastern sample of emerging adults. |
