- This study identifies reasons 10 mothers belonging to a support group in southeast Florida chose to homeschool their children in lieu of sending them to public or private schools. The researcher used the phenomenological approach of qualitative inquiry by employing structured interviews to determine what led the participants to choose homeschooling for their children. Major findings include: 1) Qualifications of mothers as teachers; 2) Criticism of traditional school settings; 3) Homeschooling as a lifestyle; 4) Social lives of homeschooled children; and, 5) Desired outcomes of homeschooling. The participants believed they were qualified to teach their children because mothers are teachers by nature, they know their children better than anyone else, and they have access to many resources. Criticisms of traditional school settings included environment, administrative policies, class size, and homework. The area of homeschooling as a lifestyle consisted of family time, values, freedom, and flexibility. The social lives of homeschooled children were illustrated as being rich with friends and extracurricular activities. The goals participants had for their children as a result of homeschooling were for them to be independent thinkers, to possess a love of learning, and to enjoy childhood for as long as possible.
