|a The lack of marital stability has been a concern in the United States for decades. Researchers and marriage and family counselors have sought to determine which therapeutic models and techniques are most effective at facilitating change with couples. There is a scarcity of research focusing on the process/content distinction in therapy as a way to better understand the change process. The purpose of this study was to investigate solution-focused marital therapy from the lens of the process/content distinction and, in particular, formal content and informal content, in an effort to improve understanding of how change transpires during this therapeutic model. Process refers to the techniques, methods, and interventions used in the model to bring about change. Formal content refers to the model’s theory of problems used across cases, namely, for every problem there are exceptions (i.e., problem/exceptions). Informal content refers to the client’s idiosyncratic, subjective view of problems. These findings fill the gap in literature by answering the following research questions: (a) How will the information derived from the research fit with the solution-focused marital therapy model?; (b) How will the study’s findings inform, change, or refine solution-focused marital therapy?; and (c) How will the study results affect the practice of solution-focused marital therapy? A qualitative case study design using content analysis was implemented to transcribe, highlight, and analyze excerpts from an archived video in the professional literature titled, Together in the Middle of the Bed: Brief Treatment of a Couple (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Association, 2008). The findings provided various examples of theories and techniques used in solution-focused marital therapy. For example, analysis of the transcripts provided examples of the model’s formal content conceptualization (i.e., problem/exceptions). In addition, change processes transpiring during the session emphasized informal content, rather than formal content, thereby highlighting the key role of the couple’s own resources and strengths to solve problems. The implications of this study are threefold. First, by understanding the process/content distinction in solution-focused marital therapy and, in particular, formal and informal content, researchers and marriage and family counselors can more clearly comprehend how this model works. Second, this study provided better insight into how change transpires within this model of therapy. Third, this investigation encourages scholars and counselors to develop a better appreciation for this model’s eclectic capabilities. |
