|a The purpose of the study was to explore the complex relationships between depression, rumination, gender, and gender roles. A total of 386 participants completed three self-report questionnaires assessing depression, rumination, and gender roles. It was found that depression and rumination are strongly associated. In addition, rumination rates were higher in women, supporting a gender-specific cognitive risk. Depression rates were equal for both genders. Rumination did not differ as a function of gender roles. The associations between gender roles and depression were complex, with femininity emerging as a protective factor, and androgynous individuals having lower depression rates than undifferentiated ones. Theoretical implications regarding the change of gender role constructs and their outcomes in current societal context are emphasized. Moreover, practical implications concerning women’s increased risk for rumination and depression and its importance in clinical settings were discussed. |
