Abstract:
Democracy strives to obtain freedom for all It upholds individuality and unique personal expression of thought, love, success, and so on. With these democratic ideals, members of such a society should be able to achieve ultimate happiness in all of life’s endeavors. Once this has been achieved, such persons are said to have reached the American Dream. However, American democracy is in actuality defeated by the social institution of capitalism. Contradictory to democracy, capitalism enforces adherence to established sets of rules and regulations. It supports and rewards those who successfully fit the mold of society’s culture. Capitalism insists upon institutionalization of all facets of life in order to ensure utmost efficiency. Conformity to the ideals of individualism and bureaucratization are essential for success. The basic underpinnings of capitalism are at odds with those of democracy and therefore as long as capitalism controls society, the hopes of accomplishing the goals of democracy and obtaining the American Dream remain fantasies.
