|a The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the direct instruction of vocabulary versus the instruction of vocabulary through literature for first grade students. Participants included 12 students who were randomly selected and divided into two groups. The groups were assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: direct vocabulary instruction through discussion or vocabulary’ instruction through literature. Instruction was given over a six-week period of time. The students were given a pre-test before each lesson and a post-test after each lesson was taught. The post-test was administered on the fifth day after each lesson was taught. This study indicates that there is no significant difference between the direct instruction of vocabulary and vocabulary instruction through literature. |
