|a As a Jesuit school, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, FL is governed by the Principles of Jesuit Education. Its core values are based on the teachings of St. Ignatius in the Spiritual Exercises. One of the first principles is that the education provided in Jesuit schools be “world affirming.” A world-affirming education is one that follows the Jesuit principle of “finding God in all things.” The study was concerned with how Belen Jesuit could enhance its pedagogy in order to provide a world-affirming education consistent with the Principles of Jesuit Education. The hope was that introducing the concept of teaching as a sacramental act as described by Mary Elizabeth Mullino Moore would foster the implementation of this principle. To evaluate the extent of the world-affirming education provided at Belen Jesuit and indicated where enhancements can be made in this regard, surveys were conducted among the administrators, faculty, and counselors of Belen Jesuit, as well as members of the graduating classes from 2013-2017. In addition, members of the administrative team and department chairpersons were interviewed. It was concluded that the pedagogy of world-affirming education can be enhanced at Belen Jesuit if its teachers begin to see their work as a ministry, if the school community adopts a sacramental worldview that is cross-curricular, and if they begin to see teaching as a sacramental act. |
