|a Infertility prevents many couples from conceiving their own biological children. The introduction of assisted reproductive technologies has allowed thousands of couples, and individuals, to have their own biological children despite fertility complications; however, the introduction and integration of this technology has resulted in many ethical, social, and legal issues. In vitro fertilization is the most popular type of Assisted Reproductive Technology, but it is extremely costly and has varying success rates which leads many couples and practitioners to perform multiple embryo transfers which commonly leads to multiple births. Multiple birth pregnancies and deliveries are high-risk for the mother and the fetus and are frequently associated with in vitro fertilization procedures. Technologies have been refined and new techniques have been introduced which focus on reducing the risk of multiple births and medical complications, while maintaining favorable success rates and will be discussed in this systematic review. |
