- Abstract:
- The purpose of this study was to design and validate a clinical assessment tool, the Parental Alienation Scale (PAS), which could simultaneously identify both the presence and related severity of parental alienation. The PAS was developed based on the eight manifestations of parental alienation originally identified by Gardner (1985). In addition, the current study examined the relationship between the presence of parental alienation and the presence of a family history of intimate partner violence (IPV). IPV was identified through a brief screening tool, the Hurt Insult Threaten Scream assessment (HITS), developed by Sherin, et., al (1998). The PAS, HITS and other study materials were administered to a sample of 592 self-identified, alienated parents. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted through which a final factor solution of six factors was identified within the PAS to include 23 items with factor loadings ranging between .544-.899. Additionally, 66.3% of all alienated study participants were found to have a family history of intimate partner violence based on the HITS screening tool. Findings obtained through the exploratory factor analysis appear to indicate the PAS measures both the presence and related severity of parental alienation. Findings obtained through data analysis appear to indicate that parental alienation occurs more often in families with a history of intimate partner violence. Additional research is required to confirm these findings.
