- Abstract:
- Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experience of chronic pain sufferers (CPS) utilizing prescribed medical marijuana for treatment. Objective: The objective of this research was to provide insight into the lived experience of CPS through their own words. The illumination of these lived experiences provided understanding and insight that guides patient centric care and evidentiary support for further scientific inquiry. Method: Hermeneutic phenomenology was employed to explore the lived experience of CPS utilizing prescribed medical marijuana for treatment. Interviews took place with study participants until no new information was derived. The interviews were analyzed for common themes so that new meaning and understanding could be derived. Results: Four related themes and two sub-themes: stigma with the sub-theme concealment, desperation, quality of life with the sub-theme meaningful existence and empowerment emerged from this phenomenological inquiry. The themes brought forth the essence of this experience as expressed through these CPS’ existential lifeworlds of spatial, corpeal, temporal and relational. Starck’s (2008) Theory of Meaning was the framework utilized for gaining a deeper and authentic understanding of this phenomenon. Conclusion: Living with chronic pain is a complex experience that is unique to each individual. This research sought to obtain an understanding of CPS utilizing prescribed medical marijuana for treatment. The essence of these lived experiences provided an illumination of a dynamic, complex event that resulted in a sense of stigma, concealment and desperation which promulgated a search for quality of life that sent the study participants on a personal journey to finding meaningful existence resulting in a feeling of empowerment from the use of medical marijuana. The sharing of this human experience casts light on a global health epidemic.
