|a The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between burnout among cancer nurses and how they cope with distress. Nurses (N = 100), age 23-71, were assessed on coping, anxiety, depression, and burnout. The study was conducted in local hospitals in South Florida. Results indicated that problem-focused coping is associated with depression and anxiety and with moderate to high levels of burnout. As a contrast, the emotion-focused coping was not significantly associated with depression or anxiety but was associated with moderate and severe burnout. Results indicated that burnout was strongly associated with anxiety and depression. It is recommended that hospitals and hospice care clinics consider stress related training for cancer nurses and address potentially excessive workload. |
