|a Background: Regulatory guidelines mandate that every advanced practice nursing student must achieve specific core competencies in his or her specialty area prior to graduating from their masters-level nursing program. To ensure safe and effective clinical practice, advanced practice clinical assessment is a crucial component in validating advanced clinical practice competence. Realization as to the importance of a competent Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is an important basis for the profession of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). Purpose: To review the current practices of FNP programs and preceptors/mentors in applying the existing clinical practice standards for FNP students and the initial development of a draft of a Competency-Based Assessment Tool for FNP students. Theoretical Framework: Lenburgs‘ (1999) Competency Outcomes Performance Assessment Model (COPA) provided the framework for this project. Methods: Following a qualitative design, this project was conducted using four phases. FNP programs throughout the United States were surveyed regarding the current modalities that they are using to measure competence in their FNP students. Current board certified FNP‘s were surveyed regarding which modalities were used to evaluate their competence prior to graduation from their FNP program, and which methods they utilize to measure competencies in their current practices when mentoring or precepting FNP students. An initial draft of a Competency Based Assessment Tool was designed and then presented to an expert panel for evaluation. Results: Information gathered from the FNP programs and the board certified FNP‘s, provided validity as to how the educational preparation of FNP students is important to their clinical practice upon graduation from their educational program. With increased demands to practice and the increase in the variety of practice settings used by FNP‘s, it was important to understand what methods these individuals felt best prepared them for practice. Data gathered during the surveys assisted in the creation of the initial draft of a Competency-Based Assessment Tool for FNP students. Conclusion: This tool was created to assist in the promotion of academic excellence in FNP students and to promote to clinical excellence in advanced practice nursing. |
