520 3    |a Adolescence is a period where an individual actively engages in explorative behaviors such as learning cultural practices and learning about one’s culture. This exploration eventually comes to a resolution where the individual develops an attachment towards a particular group. Various identity development theories and models are used to understand its development and the significant impact it has on people’s lives and well-being. The purpose of the present study is to examine the impact of Haitian adolescents’ ethnic identity on their psychological well-being. For the purpose of this study, adolescents will be examined to see how the level of their ethnic identity influences their psychological well-being. The remainder of this section critically reviews the initial discussion on identity and identity models that help to formulate an understanding of its development. It will also contain a review of the contemporary literature regarding ethnic identity development and how it impacts psychological well-being. The review concludes with a summary and critique of the existing literature, followed by a discussion of the specific research question and hypotheses suggested by the lack of literature pertaining to the population of Haitian adolescents in question for this thesis.
