Abstract:
A successful secondary school program that seeks to group and regroup pupils according to their developing abilities and interests, that capitalizes upon and grows out of the work the pupil has done in the elementary school, and that hopes to Join forces with the family in projecting appropriate vocational and academic goals will require a strong guidance program. The pupil personnel services at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, therefore, were reorganized to better reflect such a philosophy of the school. The school is attended by boys and girls whose ages range from eleven to fifteen. They are grouped according to a nongraded continuous progress schedule whereby each student is involved in a program where he actually savors the benefits of continuous progress. He is the baseline and the only yardstick against which his true accomplishment is measured. He starts at his own performance level and continues to work with no ceilings on learning imposed by the school. Many evaluations of pupil personnel services have been conducted throughout the country. The researcher finds that most of these evaluations, however, have involved administrators, teachers, pupil personnel workers, parents and college professors.' Few have actually asked the recipients themselves to evaluate the services. Taking the approach of surveying the recipients of the guidance services, the researcher proposed to determine whether or not the pupil personnel services at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School were meeting the needs of the students according to the students’ standards. The conclusions drawn from this study will hopefully influence future planning and alterations of the pupil personnel services at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School.
