|a Athletics is the most widely participated in extracurricular activity among high school students. Researchers have noticed that many male African American high school and college students who play football and basketball tend to perform less well academically compared to their non-athletic and non-African American peers. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential role of specialized academic support services for male African American student-athletes at the high school level. This study specifically focused on those high school athletes who play the spo11s of basketball and football. Data was collected using a needs assessment survey distributed to staff at nine public high schools located in Miami-Dade County Florida. High schools where 51% or more of the student population are of African American descent were targeted. Guidance counselors, athletic directors. and the coaches of the basketball and football teams completed the survey. It was hypothesized that male African American high school athletes who attend higher performing high schools will have higher overall academic performing than those attending lower performing schools. It was hypothesized that special zed academic support services tor African American high school athletes will be associated with overall academic performance. It was also hypothesized that specialized academic support services will be limited for high school athletes. As hypothesized. Academic support services among African American male student-athletes at the high school level were associated with overall academic performance and specialized academic support services were limited. However, African American male student athletes attending higher performing schools did not perform better academically than those attending lower performing schools. Findings highlight the importance of support services tor these athletes, even in those schools which are rated higher academically. Recommendations arising from this research include specialized programs for athletes that respond to their academic needs and increase social support. |
