|a The objective of this study is to determine if south Florida high schools are compliant with American Heart Association recommendation concerning the preparticipation exam and National Athletic Trainers Association recommendations for the implementation and annual practice of an emergency action plan. It is expected that 75% of south Florida high schools will he compliant with the American Heart Association recommendations concerning the preparticipation exam. It is also expected that 75% of south Florida high school will be compliant with the National Athletic Trainers Association recommendations concerning the emergency action plan. Although SCA is a rare occurrence, it is of utmost importance to educate those in charge regarding the health and safety of today’s athletes. The need for a formal preparticipation cardiac screening that adheres to the recommendations established by the American Heart Association will be emphasized. Many high schools lack certified athletic trainers and/or emergency medical staff, as well as the equipment that may help in successfully managing a cardiac emergency. Therefore, this study should define and emphasize the need for adequate facilities, adequate equipment, certified licensed personnel, and the need for proper implementation of a physical screening for possible cardiac abnormalities and an efficient emergency action plan in the case life threatening emergencies. |
