|a The primary goal explored in this thesis-project is to develop suggestions for further strengthening the process of spiritual direction of Polish-born seminarians at Mundelein Seminary; a secondary benefit may be the demonstration of an approach which could apply to other foreign-born seminarians in U.S. seminaries. The method utilized is the Whiteheads' threefold procedure of attention, assertion, and pastoral response. This process begins by paying attention to the lived experience of spiritual directors and seminarians in Poland and the U.S., as well as to the Christian tradition, including Scripture, and to both Polish and American culture, then allowing these voices to challenge, affirm, and complement each other, and finally to developing pastoral responses based on the outcome of the assertion process. |
