520 3    |a The primary purpose of this study is to examine the effects theatre can have on audience’s compassion, open-mindedness, and empathy on social issues. Theatre is often seen in society as a source of entertainment while its purpose and function can play a more meaningful role than otherwise suggested. Theatre has a wide range of utilities from being used as a therapeutic practice for those with mental disabilities and prison inmates to being used as a tool to support youth development and influencing society in a soft, non-coercive way. This study examines the transformational affects theatre can have on an audience, specifically on whether or not it can affect an individual’s view of societal issues, like homosexuality, incarceration, racial inequality and sexual abuse. For the purpose of this study, “audiences” included not only those viewing a performance, but those who had participated in a theatre production or any activity involving the exposure of theatre such as an actor or director. The study included the collection of feedback from theatrical spectators, actors and directors on their views, opinions and feelings toward the social issue focused on in the play with which they were involved. Findings supported the research hypotheses. The findings revealed that all audiences found the societal issues to be very compelling and significant in their lives. This study demonstrated that theatre can help bring compassion, empathy andopen-mindedness to societal issues for audience members.
