|a In the Cuban tradition the presence of Mary in the ethos of the multitudes is not only a preparation for the Gospel, but a presence of it already. When the Sacred Congregation for Evangelization studied the theme of Popular Piety and the Missionary Apostolate, the participants pointed out that these popular devotions to Mary and other cultural ways of expressing belief had in many instances kept alive the faith of the people, especially within the Church behind the Iron Curtain. Throughout this thesis it has been shown that in Cuba through the popular devotion to Our Lady of Charity, the Church has been capable of, uniting the vital forces of a people, and of turn~ the treasure of their religiosity into the Christian faith. Mary's title La Caridad is a call to love God above all, and to love the neighbor as oneself; it is a call to leave self behind and to go forward in charity toward others. That the poor will be evangelized is the word of the Gospel. Nobody is poorer than those who are away from the treasure of the Sacred Liturgy, from the authentic light of the Gospel and the life of the Sacraments. The discovery of the popular piety is for all of us a sign that the masses turned into multitudes by Mary are hungry for God, and that in the faith they can be satisfied. |
