|a Purpose : The purpose of this study was to examine the spiritual preparation programs and experiences Christian school leaders have undertaken to become the spiritual leaders of the school; it also sought to identify the Christian school leader's description of servant leadership as it related to spiritual leadership. The goal of this study was to examine Christian school leaders' experiences and spiritual preparation programs, in order to better assist Christian school leaders to spiritually lead their schools. Method : Investigation took place through a phenomenological study. In-depth interviews with open-ended questions were the main method of gathering data. The participants of this study were selected through a nominated sample. The researcher assumed the role of interviewer. The researcher used the constant-comparison method in the data analysis of the information received. Through the interview process, every effort was made in giving a vivid description of Christian school leaders' experiences. Twelve Christian school leaders were selected and interviewed. Major Findings : The participants in this study articulated that they are not only spiritual leaders of their schools but servant leaders as well. Participants characterized servant leaders as leaders who do whatever needs to be done to further the community toward success without neglecting their own tasks and responsibilities. Other servant leadership characteristics included fostering an environment and providing the needs of the constituents so that they have sufficient opportunities to be successful in their given roles. Participants further elaborated that a servant leader is a person who is willing to make changes and hold the school to a higher standard while consistently leading the school's mission and vision. The participants described what a school would reflect if there were true spiritual and servant leadership. The school would be a caring place where the needs of the community would outweigh the needs of the individual. The success of the individual would be encouraged, shared, and applauded by the community. Spiritual maturity would be evident in all members of the community where all are spiritual leaders. An ongoing desire to improve spiritual development would be evident. All of the participants believed their school communities see them as both spiritual and servant leaders. Participants described spiritual leadership as an ongoing process of one's personal relationship with God. All of the participants noted that a time of meditation, Bible reading, and prayer are all necessary tools towards one's ongoing spiritual development. The participants perceived that personal experiences, family members, people, and events that have taken place at church, school, and college impacted spiritual development. |
