520 3    |a In the Shooter exhibition the author considered her identity as an artist and an athlete, and the close relationship between these two parts of her life. The project set out to document the somewhat obscure sport of competitive shooting, in which the author is an active participant, and in doing so she also created a self-portrait. The challenge was to identify the key elements that are universal to the shooter’s experience and present those visually. Reaching this goal required an in-depth review of the sport, the author’s development as a shooter, her philosophies as an artist, and an analysis of the painters and photographers who have influenced her evolution. The examination of these combined elements provides an understanding of how she arrived at this final project. The series includes 29 silver gelatin prints, divided into several groupings of images that also fit together as a complete piece. Each group varies in technique from the camera format to the print dimensions, but these variances serve a calculated purpose. The final result is a collection of images that shed light on the world of competitive shooting and represent who the author is as a shooter in both definitions of the word.
