Abstract:
This investigation employed a survey design to examine and compare the attitudes of teachers in the Caribbean islands of Barbados, Cayman Islands, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent, toward the inclusion of students with disabilities in regular classrooms. The Scale of Teachers' Attitudes toward Inclusive Classrooms (STATIC), along with an adapted background instrument initially developed by H. Keith Cochran (1999) were administered to 642 teachers in the six islands. Overall attitude was determined by the total score on the STATIC. This instrument is made up of twenty items with values ranging from zero to five. The highest possible score on the STATIC is one hundred. Results showed that on average, teachers in the islands were moderately positive about inclusion. However, there were differences in the attitudes of teachers across the islands. Teachers in the Cayman Islands, Barbados and St. Lucia had more positive attitudes than their counterparts in St. Vincent and Jamaica. Grenada fell in between the high and low scores. Other results revealed that those teachers who were trained in special education demonstrated more positive attitudes toward inclusion than those without training. Class size, type of class, and the number of students with disabilities included in the class were also found to be related to teacher attitudes toward inclusion.
