- Abstract:
- The ministerial question that arises from my work is two-fold: ―How can I as a
chaplain in a diverse Episcopal Independent School effectively serve and minister to this
interfaith community, respecting religious differences, promoting spiritual practices, and
sharing dialogue among members of the community while staying grounded in my own
faith tradition? And how can community practices become more meaningful for all
students in the school environment and enhance relationships?‖ I utilize Browning‘s
Strategic Practical Theology method, which begins with praxis and has four sub
movements: descriptive, historical, systematic, and strategic or fully practical theology.
In the first two chapters, I focus on the descriptive aspect of praxis in regard to my role
as chaplain and the current situation at Saint Andrew's School. In the next two chapters I
turn to the wisdom of my faith tradition, focusing in chapter three on the historical aspect
in a detailed examination of several scripture passages in which Jesus encounters women
who are in some way "other", and in chapter four on systematic theologians who have
reflected on the importance of relationships with the other. In the final chapter, I turn to a
new praxis by developing a strategy based on a survey of students at Saint Andrew's
School.
