Abstract:
Most Catholic high schools in the United States seem to lack a liturgical theology that truly informs Christian praxis. This fact seems to be rather ironic since the Catechism of the Catholic Church centralizes the believer’s spiritual activities around the Eucharistic celebration. This thesis-project procures appreciation for the role of the liturgy in the Catholic high school. A review of literature concerning secondary Catholic instruction in the faith fails to address fully this issue. Therefore, this work re-examines Archbishop McCarthy High School’s spiritual program and proposes its liturgical life as the interpretative horizon for the school’s catechetical and evangelical thrust. This project provides a descriptive narrative of the socio-economic reality of the surrounding area where the school is located to be used in the re-envisioning of the liturgical practice. This description is done as an entry point into the culture of the stakeholders while seeking to engage them in dialogue from a concrete context so that an authentic local theology can be constructed. To this end, information was gathered by soliciting the population of Archbishop McCarthy High School via anonymous questionnaires. The results provided a baseline indicator as to what liturgical values associated with its respective practices need to be better emphasized in a campus ministry program. As a result of the conversation that this project began, clear parameters can be drawn in order to articulate an ecclesiology that understands the Catholic high school as an entity that affords its stakeholders a threefold lens for ministry: theological instruction, ritual worship and ethical action.
