Abstract:
Children of immigrants who translate for their parents are known as language brokers. To date the literature has focused on this phenomenon from children’s perspectives. However, there is limited research on the effects of language brokering on the family unit. Some researchers have indicated language brokering changes family dynamics by disempowering parents, while others report that it enhances family relationships. Additionally, the research indicates mothers require brokering assistance more often than fathers. This exploratory study examined mother’s experiences with having their children translate as well as their perceptions of the parent-child relationship. Embedded in a phenomenological methodology, a total of eight participants were recruited through purposeful sampling solicited via snowballing (Creswell, 2007). Themes identified in this study revealed language brokering affects mothers’ sense of identity as well as the quality of the relationship with the broker. Findings of this study enhanced the understanding of language brokering and its impact upon mothers. This study offered insights for the counseling profession as it informed counselors of ways families deal with language barriers and its impact on mother child relationships.
