|a Throughout the existence of institutionalized sports, minorities have been a target of discrimination. American sports have erected barriers in order to keep out certain categories of people, such as blacks, women, and other minorities. The stratification found in sports reflects the bigger problem of the patterns that are prevalent in not only sports, but in society in general. The American Dream encourages people with a modest background that they can move up the social ladder with hard work and dedication. The American Dream also tells women and disadvantaged minority groups that they only have themselves to blame for their lower status in society. Social background and status factors such as social class, gender, race, and ethnicity influence major aspects of sports socialization, including the availability of sports opportunities, access to sports facilities, and encouragement to participate. Women are less likely to receive encouragement to participate in sports, while minorities are also discouraged from participating in exclusive club sports. The racial inequality in sports is a mirror for the larger picture of what is going on in society as a whole. |
