Notes

Abstract:
The primary purpose of my thesis is to argue that embryonic genetic enhancements are morally impermissible. First, I examine the biological and social eugenics movements of the twentieth century through a detailed historical analysis of early racial scientists and biologically based laws of Nazi Germany. I make arguments in opposition to social eugenics based on its numerous social consequences. Next, I discuss social eugenics in order to show the initial scientific ideas and social transitions that have preceded the modern field of genetic research. In critiquing the morality of genetic enhancements, I address important distinctions for various genetic terms. Then, I introduce and outline two bioethicists’ arguments in favor of genetic enhancements and two in opposition, showing common objections and discrepancies in opinions within the field. 1 next propose five arguments in support of my position that genetic enhancements are morally impermissible. These arguments address objections and opposing arguments, as well as strengthen arguments in favor of my position. Finally, 1 note the weaknesses of my study, and also reflect upon my contribution to not only my fields, philosophy and history, but also the field of genetics. 1 hope that this thesis promotes a deeper understanding of history’s role in future decisions, in addition to urging future generations to critically evaluate the scientific advancements that can dramatically alter human life.
